Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms very similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, typically presents clinically with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications. It is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the preferred laboratory test given its accuracy and sensitivity suggested by WHO. Confirmation of monkeypox virus infection is based on nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), using real-time or conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is preferred for the detection of unique sequences of viral DNA and can be used alone.
